Crossing Borders with the UW-Whitewater DREAM Scholars
In November the Matheson Memorial Library is joining UW-Whitewater Young Auditorium in reading My Antonia, the classic novel of Immigrants making a new life for themselves in Nineteenth Century Nebraska. To celebrate, we'll be hosting the following special event:
Immigrant children and children of immigrants cross many borders. Members of the UW-Whitewater student group Dream Scholars and Colleagues will discuss their experiences as migrants, English language learners, and first generation college students, and draw parallels between their experiences and those of the immigrants in Willa Cather’s My Antonia.
The DSC group works to assist potential and current UW-Whitewater students who are DACA (Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals) eligible, but are faced with the additional tuition burden of being classified as non-residents. It also provides bilingual educational programing concerning tuition equity and other related issues for local schools, community organizations, and the UW-Whitewater campus.
There will be a prize drawing for a $25 Young Auditorium gift certificate following the presentation. Drop by the library in November to pick up a free copy of My Antonia, and join our book discussion November 18th at 2:00pm.
